Mr. Oliver Adebayo - speaker

Mr Oliver Adebayo is a Trauma and Orthopaedic surgery Specialist Registrar in the North East London deanery. He has a subspecialty interest in both limb reconstruction and has an MSc in Surgical Innovation from Imperial College London. Oliver graduated from King's College London in 2013 and undertook his foundation training in the South Thames Foundation School. He was a London School of Surgery Core Surgical Trainee prior to commencing his specialty training in trauma & orthopaedic surgery on the Stanmore Orthopaedic Rotation. As president, he works closely with RCS England, RCSEd, JCST, BOA, T&O SAC, T&O SDG and ATDG to ensure that T&O trainees throughout the UK are fully represented. Oliver is keen to champion sustainability and innovation in surgery. Furthermore, he and the BOTA Committee remain focused on improving the culture, diversity and inclusivity within T&O surgery.

Matt Barrett - speaker

Founding President of the British Orthopaedic Medical Students Association

Matt is a junior doctor, entrepreneur and founding president of the British Orthopaedic Medical Students Association. He is a Barts medical school graduate and is passionate about helping students to make the most of their time at medical school by working smarter, not harder. 

Matt believes in encouraging collaboration with like-minded students to help us all strengthen our own network, skills and career opportunities.

Mr. Jonathan Webb - speaker

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

Mr Jonathan Webb is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon who specialises in knee surgery and Sports Medicine. He qualified from the University of Bristol Medical School in 1987, and his orthopaedic training was at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Oxford, and undertook a Fellowship at the North Sydney Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Centre in Australia.

In 1997 he was awarded a Research Fellowship by the British Association of Surgery for the Knee. This was undertaken at the prestigious Oxford Orthopaedic Engineering Centre and led to several presentations and publications on the biomechanics of ACL reconstructive surgery.

His practice is exclusively knee surgery, approximately 75% keyhole (ligament reconstruction, meniscal and chondral surgery) and 25% corrective osteotomy and replacement surgery (partial and total knee replacements). Research interests include graft fixation in ligament reconstruction and computers in joint replacement surgery.

He successfully combined his medical training with a first class rugby career, playing for Bristol and Bath Rugby Clubs. He played 33 times for England, winning two Five Nations Grand Slams and reaching the Rugby World Cup Final in 1991. In 1992 he was voted Rothmans Rugby Player of the Year. His sporting background gives him an invaluable insight into the pressures faced by top-class sportsmen and women when they suffer injury. His empathy combined with the latest techniques in orthopaedic surgery for the knee has already helped treat National and International athletes from a variety of sports.

Professor Duncan Tennent - speaker

Prof. Duncan Tennent qualified from St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1992. After training at the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital, Stanmore, he spent a year on an arthroscopic fellowship in Virginia, USA. He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon with a special interest in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at St. George's Hospital, London in 2003. He was appointed as an Honorary Reader in Orthopedic Education at the medical school in 2015 and as Professor in 2018.

He is also the Director of Medical Education at the SWLEOC Orthopaedic Education Centre. His particular interests are arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and elbow and he also spends much of his time on complex reconstructions of both joints following trauma. He has written a textbook of arthroscopic surgery as well as publishing a number of scientific articles on the subject and holds the patent for a revolutionary arthroscopic technique for reconstruction of the Acromio-clavicular Joint - The Tightrope Technique.

He lectures both nationally and internationally on shoulder and arthroscopic surgery and teaches undergraduate and postgraduate surgery at St. George's Hospital. He was the chair of the Board of Surgical Education at the Medical School and the Academic lead for the USMLE (American Medical Exam) as well as undergraduate orthopaedics. He is an examiner for FRCS(Orth) and undergraduate medical finals (MBBS). He runs the Surgical Approaches to the Shoulder and Elbow Course at St. George's Hospital with Mr Pearse and Mr Arnander.

Prof. Tennent reviews for a number of specialist journals including the the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and the Journal of Arthroscopy as well as being on

the editorial board of the Bone and Joint Journal.

Simon Fleming - speaker

Founding member and representative for the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance (IODA)

Simon is a London-based Trauma and Orthopaedic registrar. He a founding member and trainee representative for the International Orthopaedic Diversity Alliance (IODA), on the Executive board for the NIHR Clinical Education Incubator and Associate Editor for Medical Education and The Clinical Teacher. Previously he was Vice Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Trainee Doctors’ Group (ATDG) and President of the British Orthopaedic Trainees’ Association (BOTA).

While passionate about orthopaedics, surgical education and mentoring, he has special interests in hand surgery, competency decisions and combating bullying, discrimination, harassment and the lack of diversity and equity in healthcare.

Professor Peter Bates - online ATLS workshop

Professor Peter Bates is a trauma surgeon who works at the Royal London Hospital. He is a Senior Lecturer at QMUL and also the Co-chair for Orthopaedic Trauma Sciences MSc. Co-founder orthohub.xyz. an organization aimed to provide orthopedic education to both medical students and trainees through a variety of ways! offering live webinars, virtual 360 degrees teaching as well as ODM teaching. He is passionate when it comes to medical education but, has other interests apart from medicine such as mountain biking, DIY woodworking, and teaching people about the medical field.
