What is BOMSA?
The British Orthopaedic Medical Student Association (BOMSA) was created in Summer 2018 by co-founders Matthew Barrett, Florence Wilkinson (both medical students at Barts and The London) and orthopaedic surgeons, Mr Sebastian Dawson-Bowling, Mr Sammy Hanna & Mr Anoop Prasad. Previously known as LUOS (London Undergraduate Orthopaedic Society), BOMSA is a collaborative effort between the five London-based medical schools; Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, University College London, Imperial College London, Kings College London and St George's.
The founding principle of the society is to improve exposure and accessibility to the surgical speciality of Trauma and Orthopaedics for medical students across the whole of the UK.
What events can I get involved in?
BOMSA aims to run and advertise events for all medical students interested in orthopaedic surgery. BOMSA delivers collaborative events and advertises individual events from our partners across London. BOMSA events include:
-
The National Undergraduate Orthopaedic Symposium (NUOS) - The largest undergraduate orthopaedic conference in the UK
-
T&O Lectures & seminars
-
Practical workshops
-
Research & presentation opportunities
-
Networking & social events
How can I join BOMSA as a member?
BOMSA is for all, whether you're a medical student or just interested in orthopaedics, BOMSA provides a means to explore the field of Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery. There is no membership fee to join LUOS, just like our Facebook page and keep an eye on the website to discover our latest events.
How can I join the Committee?
The BOMSA committee is elected internally every summer. Applicants are required to be full-time medical students at either Barts and The London, Kings College, UCL, Imperial or St Georges. The current format is through nomination by each London-based institution's orthopaedic or surgical society. Experience with arranging conferences is desirable. The application portal for future years will be advertised on our social media platforms, including this website. Get in touch with us by email via Bomsa.publicity@gmail.com for more details.
